Confirmation

‘God has called you by name and made you his own.’
In the Church of England, the bishop says these words to each person being confirmed. But what is Confirmation?
  • A special way of receiving God’s grace. At Confirmation the presence of the Holy Spirit renewed in you through prayer and the laying on of the bishop’s hands. This “extra helping of grace” is a gift from God to prepare you to live the Christian life more fully and faithfully.
  • A step of personal faith. Confirmation seals the promises to follow the Lord Jesus made at Baptism. For those who were christened at a young age, this is the opportunity for taking on the promises made on their behalf by godparents.
  • Admission to Holy Communion. Traditionally, Confirmation paves the way to receiving Holy Communion. However, in several churches people now can receive it before Confirmation. In this truly Most Blessed Sacrament we partake of the most wonderful gift from the Lord Jesus, his Body and Blood, to be out food and nourishment for the Christian life.
  • A rite of passage. God wants us to keep growing into the likeness of Jesus Christ regardless of our age (Cf. Rom 8:29 – Eph 4:15). Confirmation is an important step along the road to this.
The road to Confirmation requires preparation. First, we need to be willing: expecting to receive from the gifts of the Holy Spirt, open to God’s calling, ready for his embrace, and wanting to experience his presence in our lives.
Secondly, candidates are expected to participate to a series of talks to explore what living the Christian life means to them.

We hold one Confirmation service at All Saints' per year. More dates through the year are available at St Albans Abbey. If you would like to explore Confirmation, please get in touch with the Parish Office.
'Speaking the truth in love,
we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.'

- Ephesians 4:15
