Sacrament of Reconciliation
Confession
In Saint Mark’s Gospel the first words that Jesus says call for repentance: ‘the kingdom of God is come near; repent and believe in the good news’ (Mark 1: 15).
Repentance, turning away from sin and towards God, is the foundation of Christian life. When we repent God is able to change us to be more like his Son Jesus. Why does the Church of England have a Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession? Confession is a practical way to mark our repentance - regular turning again toward the light of Christ and committing ourselves afresh to live in his life. Jesus gave his apostles and to his Church, power to forgive sins (John 20:23). It is through this mandate from Jesus that a priest forgives and absolves of our sins – they declare God’s forgiveness for those who repent. |
